District Snow Team to Fully Deploy Saturday, February 21, for Winter Storm

Friday, February 20, 2015
Total accumulation may be up to 2 inches. Subfreezing temperatures dictate caution when traveling by foot or vehicle

(Washington, DC) Mayor Muriel Bowser will deploy the District Snow Team, starting at 7 am, Saturday, February 21 with a full deployment of more than 200 snow trucks that will be on their routes by 9 am. Snow is expected tomorrow starting sometime after 9 am with temperatures in the 20s and rising. Snow may continue falling through 4 pm then change to freezing rain for a few hours and then become all rain after 8-9 pm. A quick 1-2 inches of snow will fall which will accumulate on pavements and then .01 inch of ice is possible before changing to all rain overnight Saturday into Sunday. Sunday we could see a few rain showers with temperatures in the mid 40s with the precipitation ending around noon.

Whatever the mode of travel, people are asked to be cautious because sub-freezing temperatures are expected overnight. Property owners are asked to put abrasives (pet-safe de-icer, rock salt or non-clumping kitty litter) on their sidewalks before the storm starts.

Winter Weather Safety and Preparedness Tips: Motorists are asked to clear all snow from the vehicle first then drive cautiously.  Assist elderly or disabled neighbors with clearing their sidewalks. Also, for plow drivers’ safety, “Don’t crowd the plow.”  Residents are encouraged to go to snow.dc.gov for updates before, during and after winter storms, and for tips to get one’s home and family prepared for inclement weather. Residents also may sign up at alertdc.dc.gov to receive emergency alerts and notifications from Alert DC.

The deployment plan is developed and implemented based on predictions made by the weather services; however, predictions may change after the plan has been implemented. Under those circumstances, the District Snow Team will pivot to meet the new conditions.

The Department of Public Works would like to advise its trash and recycling collection customers that the extended period of subfreezing temperatures is affecting its ability to make its collections. If collections are missed, please hold onto the items until the next collection day.
