District Snow Team to Fully Deploy Sunday, March 1, for Snow, Freezing Rain, Sleet Mix

Sunday, March 1, 2015
Sunday’s predicted wintry mix can create hazardous travel conditions.

Mayor Muriel Bowser will deploy the District Snow Team, starting at 6 am Sunday, March 1. The system is expected to move into the region sometime between 7 am and 9 am, bringing snow, freezing rain and sleet. Saturday’s overnight low of 19F means pavements will be below freezing and any precipitation will freeze on contact. The forecast indicates possibly a coating to an inch of snow, before transitioning to freezing rain and sleet Sunday afternoon, possibly ending after 8 pm-9 pm. There could be some freezing drizzle overnight Sunday into Monday morning, which could affect the morning rush hour.

Whatever the mode of travel (walking, driving, cycling), people are urged to be cautious. Property owners are asked to put abrasives (pet-safe de-icer, rock salt or non-clumping kitty litter) on their sidewalks before the storm starts. This will make clearing them easier. Sidewalks should be cleared within 24 hours following the end of the storm.

Winter Weather Safety and Preparedness Tips:  Everyone is asked to travel cautiously if they must go out before temperatures go above freezing. Assist elderly or disabled neighbors with clearing their sidewalks. Also, for plow drivers’ safety, “Don’t crowd the plow.”  Residents are encouraged to go to snow.dc.gov for updates before, during and after winter storms, and for tips to get one’s home and family prepared for inclement weather.  Residents also may sign up at alertdc.dc.gov to receive emergency alerts and notifications from Alert DC.

The deployment plan is developed and implemented based on predictions made by the weather services; however, predictions may change after the plan has been implemented. Under those circumstances, the District Snow Team will pivot to meet the new conditions.

Since mid-February, icy alleys and streets, along with continuing subfreezing temperatures have complicated the Department of Public Works’s trash/recycling collections operations, leaving about 30 percent to 40 percent of these items uncollected. On Friday, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced the “All Hands on Deck” project to collect all missed trash and recycling by Sunday. “We are continuing our ‘All Hands on Deck’ trash/recycling collections operations as best as we can,” said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr. "Our goal is to complete the project Sunday as planned.”
