District Snow Team Deploys Tonight at 11 pm

Friday, January 20, 2012
Motorists, pedestrians urged to travel cautiously; property owners asked to spread abrasives on sidewalks.

(Washington, DC)  The District will mount a full deployment to meet tonight’s wintry mix of snow and sleet, followed by freezing rain early Saturday morning. As of 11 pm, the District Snow Team will have more than 200 plows on their routes. Earlier this week, crews sprayed bridges, ramps and other elevated structures with a beet-juice brine to increase resistance to icing.

Snow and sleet are likely to begin falling between 11 pm and 1 am and temperatures will be below freezing. Overnight, about an inch of snow and sleet may accumulate. On Saturday, rain or freezing rain will fall before 1pm, then just rain between 1pm and 4pm as the temperature rises above freezing.
